The Day the Earth Stood Still

Sunday, January 25 –It is the day before our January exams start and I have a terrible headache. It’s so bad that I’m having trouble even turning my head without feeling a nasty pain. But there is a good reason for the headache: I have been studying all day long without a break.  And I’m not finished, there’s still an enormous amount of work ahead of me. I’ve been thinking of calling in sick but I’m not sure if it’s really a good idea. I don’t think you are allowed to retake the exams unless you have a very good reason (like a shark attack or being run over by a bus).

So what subject am I studying for? EVERY SUBJECT. Everything we’ve learned so far this school year will be part of the test. So much to do, and so little time!

To give you a better idea of what I’m talking about, here’s my exam schedule for next week:

I have already spent all of Saturday studying for the history exam. Basically I had to reread most of my school books and take notes. The main topics that will be tested are:

• The US Economy 1945 – 1989
• The American Way of Life
• The Montgomery Bus Boycott 1956
• B. Johnson and The Vietnam War 1963 – 1968
• The Moon Landing
• Martin Luther King

As you can see it’s mostly about US history because that’s what we’ve been learning about the past couple of months.

With history covered, it’s now time to start reviewing the topics for the English test. You may have noticed the two week gap between my blog posts. I don’t really have a lot of time for anything but the test preparations.

In English we are going to be tested on the following authors and books:

William Shakespeare:

• King Lear

Sylvia Plath:

• Black Rook in Rainy Weather                            
• The Times Are Tidy
• Morning Song
• Mirror
• Poppies in July
• Child

Elizabeth Bishop:

• The Fish
• The Bight
• At the Fishhouses
• The Prodigal
• The Armadillo
• Filling Station

In both History and English we will be expected to write essays about a random topic. I just hope there will be enough time to finish all the essays. It’s quite a challenge since we’re also expected to include famous quotes by the authors and each essay has to be at least five pages long.

There’s another long night of learning ahead of me. Hopefully it will all be worth the effort and I’ll pass the exams. Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed!

Deutsch

Es ist Sonntag, der 25. Januar. Es ist der Vorabend der grossen Januar-Testwoche und ich habe mächtige Kopfschmerzen. Ich kann momentan nicht einmal meinen Kopf richtig drehen ohne das es zünftig weh tut. Aber es gibt einen triftigen Grund für die Schmerzen: Ich habe schon den ganzen Tag nur gelernt und zwar ohne Pause. Und ich bin auch noch nicht fertig, es gibt noch ziemlich viel zu tun. Ich habe mir schon überlegt ob ich mich krank melden soll aber ich weiss nicht ob das eine so gute Idee ist. Ich glaube man darf die Tests nicht wiederholen ausser man hat einen wirklich guten Grund wie zum Beispiel eine Haifisch-Attacke oder wenn man vom Bus überfahren wird.

Also für welches Fach lerne ich denn jetzt? FUER ALLE FAECHER. Alles was wir bis jetzt während des Schuljahres gelernt haben wird auch Bestandteil der Prüfungen sein. So viel zu tun und so wenig Zeit!

Damit ihr besser versteht von was ich eigentlich spreche, seht ihr jetzt eine Auflistung meines Prüfungs-Zeitplanes für die kommende Woche:

Ich habe gestern schon den ganzen Samstag damit verbracht für die Geschichtsprüfung zu lernen. Ich musste noch einmal alle Schulbücher durchlesen und Notizen dazu machen. Die Haupt-Themen der Prüfung sind:

• Die US Wirtschaft 1945 – 1989
• Der “American Way of Life”
• Der Montgomery Bus Boykott 1956
• B. Johnson und der Vietnam Krieg 1963 – 1968
• Die Mondlandung
• Martin Luther King

Wie ihr seht geht es vor allem um die amerikanische Geschichte, weil dass ist es auch worauf wir uns in den letzten Monaten im Unterricht konzentriert haben.

Für das Thema Geschichte bin ich jetzt vorbereitet aber nun muss ich das Gleiche auch noch für das Fach Englisch machen. Ihr habt vielleicht die zweiwöchige Pause zwischen meinen letzten Beiträgen bemerkt. Ich habe leider nicht viel Zeit was anderes zu tun als Schulbücher zu lesen.

Im Fach ‚Englisch‘ werden wir zu folgenden Autoren und Büchern getestet:

Sowohl in Geschichte als auch in Englisch wird erwartet, dass wir einen Aufsatz über ein zufällig gewähltes Thema schreiben. Ich hoffe natürlich, dass die knappe Zeit reicht um alle Aufsätze fertig zu schreiben. Das ist eine monumentale Aufgabe, denn es wird auch erwartet, dass wir berühmte Zitate in unsere Texte einbauen und erklären. Zudem sollte jeder Aufsatz mindestens 5 Seiten lang werden.

Es steht mir somit eine weitere lange Nacht des Lernes bevor. Hoffentlich ist es das alles wert und ich schaffe es die Prüfungen zu bestehen. Wünscht mir Glück und haltet die Daumen gedrückt!
